Balanced water distribution for vertical indoor farm
The need
Vertical farming involves the production of food in high-rise industrial commercial units, with crops planted over multiple levels to efficiently grow at large scale.
Desrcibed as the most advanced of its kind in the world, this indoor farm is stacked 17 stories high and distributing water over this size was proving difficult.
Our customer was faced with the issue of over-watering at the lower levels and water starvation at the higher levels.
The solution
Akro supplied over 1,000 PVC insert flow control valves which were installed at each level of the building.
By fitting a constant flow valve at each pipe branch, the water flow was balanced across the levels, resulting in a constant and even distribution throughout the vertical farm.
This resulted in a significant saving of water use and better crop management and yield.
The benefits
- Balance water flow across the building.
- Significant water saving.
- Better crop management and yield.
- Increased profitability of the farm
